Kiki Florist Faces S$1,100 Loss from Fake Bulk Order by Impostor Claiming to be from SAF

SINGAPORE — What was meant to be a variety of beautiful blooms turned into a costly mistake for Kiki Florist when they fell victim to a suspected hoax. The small business, located in KAP Mall along Bukit Timah Road, reported losses exceeding S$1,100 after a deceptive bulk order for 150 bouquets was never collected.

According to a blog post shared by the florist on 10 September 2024, it all began on 8 September when a man, presenting himself as part of a corporate order from the government and affiliated with Bedok Army Camp, requested the vast haul of flowers. The order included 150 small bouquets and four extra-large ones, with a promise of cash payment upon collection. However, complications soon arose.

Details of the Fake Order

  • Conversation initiated: The buyer claimed he would pay S$2,200 in cash but refused to make a deposit.
  • Crucial changes: Initially pushing for a down payment, the buyer agreed on a smaller order of 50 bouquets instead.
  • The catch: On the designated pickup day, he called late, insisting on all 150 bouquets.

Joselyn Lie, co-owner of Kiki Florist, described the situation as being led on, saying, “At that moment, it was clear: we’d been strung along and stood up.” The business had already invested time and resources, ultimately leading to substantial losses.

Community Response and Similar Incidents

In the wake of this incident, Kiki Florist took to social media, stating that all their prepared bouquets were eventually purchased by a kind buyer. They also noted that they would not seek to profit from this situation. This unfortunate event follows a similar occurrence involving a hawker stall at Tiong Bahru Market, which was also misled by someone posing as an SAF representative.

In light of recent fraudulent activities, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has been alerted. A Facebook post stated, “For the seven cases that we are aware of, we have not found any evidence that these individuals are affiliated with the SAF.” MINDEF has urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

Local Businesses on the Alert

  • Vigilance encouraged: Both Kiki Florist and affected hawker responded to the need for public awareness against fraudulent orders.
  • Community measures: Local businesses are being advised to verify orders, especially when large quantities are involved.

While the experience left a bitter taste, the community rallied in support of Kiki Florist, reminding all of the importance of solidarity in times of deception.
