SINGAPORE: In a gesture of diplomatic warmth, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong congratulated Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on 17 February 2024, following the latter’s stunning victory in the recent general elections. Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding two-thirds majority in the parliament during the election held on 12 February 2024.
Wong’s congratulatory letter praised Rahman, highlighting the strong mandate received from the Bangladeshi people, which he described as a reflection of their confidence in Rahman’s leadership. “The strong mandate you received reflects the confidence and trust that the people of Bangladesh have placed in you to take the country forward,” Wong wrote.
Strengthening Ties
During his message, Wong emphasized the longstanding relationship shared between Singapore and Bangladesh, built on a foundation of mutual respect and robust people-to-people connections. He commented on the potential for enhancing collaboration in various sectors:
- Trade and investment
- Port management
- Digitalisation
- Capacity building
“I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the friendship between our countries. Singapore will continue to support Bangladesh in its development journey,” Wong stated, expressing optimism about future cooperation.
A Historic Election
This election was particularly significant as it marked the first general election following the 2024 Gen Z-driven uprising that resulted in the ousting of long-time premier Sheikh Hasina. The BNP’s landslide victory—with 212 of 300 seats—has been seen as crucial for stabilizing the nation, which has faced months of unrest that disrupted daily life and economic activities.
As Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and ex-President Ziaur Rahman, embarks on his term as prime minister, Wong has expressed his best wishes for Rahman’s health and success in this vital role.
