SINGAPORE: Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong has been awarded the prestigious Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia, recognising his tremendous contributions to fostering the Australia-Singapore relationship. The award was conferred by Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn during an investiture ceremony on 5 August 2024 at the Australian High Commission in Singapore.
Acknowledging Eminent Service
The Order of Australia is the highest civilian honour in Australia, lauding outstanding service or exceptional achievement. The citation noted Lee’s 40-year political career, particularly his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2024, where his influence has propelled closer ties between the two nations.
Significant Contributions
- Oversaw six revisions of the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement (Safta), boosting economic interaction.
- Developed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2015 to deepen collaboration.
- Supported defence and security partnerships, vital for regional stability.
- Advocated for Australia’s engagement in key regional forums.
During his remarks, Lee said he was “deeply humbled” to receive such an honour, crediting the generations of Singaporeans and Australians committed to nurturing the partnership over six decades.
Bilateral Bonds
He fondly recalled Australia’s early recognition of Singapore’s independence and the subsequent establishment of diplomatic relations. The two nations marked their harmonious relationship with events like the 35th anniversary of Exercise Wallaby, Singapore’s largest overseas military exercise held in Australia.
A Bright Future
Looking ahead, Lee is optimistic about the ongoing evolution of Singapore-Australia ties, particularly with upcoming meetings that may further enhance cooperation. He emphasised the shared values, multiculturalism, and mutual trust that form the foundation of the bilateral relationship.
Reflecting on these nonchalant yet critical ties, he said: “These deep and extensive ties did not come about by chance… I am confident that Singapore and Australia’s friendship will continue to blossom and grow.”
