Singapore’s future Mount Pleasant housing estate is set to offer home seekers a fresh choice with its new Build-to-Order (BTO) project, named Mount Pleasant Crest. This initiative will allow buyers to opt for ‘white flats’ — open layouts devoid of partitions and beams, enhancing flexibility in living space design.
Project Overview
Launching in October 2024, Mount Pleasant Crest will feature approximately 1,600 flats, including 1,350 two-room Flexi to four-room units and 270 public rental flats. This marks an increase from the earlier projection of 5,000 flats across six projects to around 6,000 across four BTO projects.
Support for Families
National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat emphasised that this development aims to provide more housing options, particularly supporting young families wishing to live near their parents. The estate’s planning aligns with community needs for mutual care.
Preserving Heritage
The site, once home to the Old Police Academy (OPA) from 1929 to 2005, entails a sensitive integration of historical elements. Six buildings from the OPA will be conserved, with alternative uses planned:
- Neighbourhood police post
- Heritage gallery for the Singapore Police Force
- Senior Police Officers’ Mess
Innovative design features will include:
- Repurposed swimming pool blocks as seating
- Old drill shed elements transformed into a pavilion
Sustainability and Accessibility
The new estate aims to be a ‘car-lite’ environment, prioritising public transit, cycling, and walking. Plans for dedicated bus lanes, wider footpaths, and cycling paths will enhance connectivity, especially with the new Mount Pleasant MRT station alighting along the Thomson-East Coast Line.
To promote green living, flats will incorporate smart features such as:
- Bicycle racks
- Electric vehicle charging points
According to the HDB, significant environmental studies on thermal comfort and wind flow have been conducted to ensure optimal design for future residents.
Upcoming Community Exhibitions
More details on the projects, community features, and design elements will be revealed during an exhibition at HDB Hub, beginning 24 September 2024. This engaging environment aims to invite feedback and inform the public about the innovative residential offerings in Mount Pleasant.
