Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are sharply escalating as North Korea’s provocative actions trigger military responses from South Korea. Recently, North Korea engaged in GPS interference, making wave-like impacts on the operation of ships and private aircraft in the region, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
Dangerous GPS Interference
On 8 and 9 November 2023, South Korea reported that ships and aircraft operating in the West Sea faced significant disruptions to their navigation systems due to GPS jamming from the North. The JCS has urged North Korea to cease these actions, stressing that it will be held accountable.
- GPS, or Global Positioning System, is essential for navigation.
- Approximately 500 aircraft and numerous ships reported GPS issues between late May and early June 2023.
- South Korea has lodged complaints with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which also admonished North Korea to halt its interferences.
Military Readiness and Joint Exercises
In a show of strength, South Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea on 8 November 2023, marking a clear response to North Korea’s recent missile tests, which included several launches of short-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
The live-fire exercise, featuring a Hyunmoo missile, was intended to exhibit South Korea’s commitment and readiness to counter any provocation from the North. This missile forms part of the country’s ‘Kill Chain’ preemptive strike system, allowing for immediate action if signs of North Korean aggression arise.
International Tensions Rise
The North’s missile demonstrations and GPS disruptions are exacerbating already heightened tensions. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korea’s leader, has publicly condemned recent joint military exercises conducted by South Korea, the United States, and Japan, labelling them as rehearsals for invasion.
The complex interplay of military actions, technological interferences, and international relations continues to shape the security landscape on the Korean Peninsula. As these provocations unfold, South Korea remains vigilant, prepared to defend against any threats.
