NParks Rescues Neglected Cats from Bedok Reservoir Flat

Several cats were rescued from a neglected flat in Bedok Reservoir, sparking concern over animal welfare in the area. This distressing event unfolded at Block 147 Bedok Reservoir Road, where residents reported instances of animals falling from the windows of the housing unit.

Residents’ Alarm Leads to Rescue

The situation came to light when a member of the Sayang Our Singapore’s Community Cats Facebook group, Reyn Teng, posted about the discovery of injured and dead cats in the vicinity. Teng recounted that a dead kitten was found on 16 December 2024, followed by another sick cat later that evening.

Investigation by NParks

Following community reports, the National Parks Board (NParks) intervened. They arrived at the scene on 20 December 2024 after receiving multiple alarms regarding potential animal neglect. According to NParks, a total of 19 cats were discovered in the flat, 12 of which were rescued. The condition of the unit was described as severely derelict, with rubbish and foul smells permeating the environment.

SPCA’s Role in the Rescue

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) played a crucial role in the rescue operation. An officer from SPCA noted that they set up a safety net beneath the lead windows to prevent further falls. One cat currently receives treatment at their facility, while others were taken to the Animal Veterinary Service.

Public Encouragement to Report Abuse

NParks stressed the importance of public involvement in reporting suspected animal cruelty. Concerned individuals can alert the authorities via their website or through the Animal Response Centre.

Jessica Kwok, Group Director of Enforcement and Investigation at NParks, stated, “We take all cases related to animal welfare seriously and investigate all feedback received.” This commitment highlights the agency’s responsibility to safeguard the welfare of pets in Singapore.

This alarming situation reveals the desperate need for greater awareness and action regarding the treatment of animals in urban environments. With growing urbanization, ensuring the safety of pets remains a vital concern.
