SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to lead the nation through some significant initiatives in early 2024, addressing the pressing concerns of cost of living while strengthening ties with neighbouring Malaysia.
More Support for Singaporeans
During a recent visit to Jalan Besar GRC on 4 January 2024, PM Wong acknowledged the challenges Singaporeans face, particularly relating to rising living costs. He indicated that the upcoming Budget announcement in February will provide further assistance.
- As part of immediate support, $300 worth of Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers were distributed to each Singaporean household.
- Wong stated, “I hope this will be a good start for you, and it will help you as you prepare for the year ahead… We will continue to provide more help for Singaporeans.”
Wong highlighted that with 2025 marking Singapore’s SG60, a time for reflection and celebration, the government will focus on programmes to uplift citizens and ensure everyone can aspire for a better future.
Celebrating Community Spirit
As part of the SG60 celebrations, PM Wong participated in the “SG60 Build with Love” initiative which aims to support underprivileged households in the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng area. He joined local residents in assembling gift boxes filled with essentials, aimed at promoting unity and care within the community.
Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, emphasised the importance of community spirit, stating, “This initiative truly embodies the spirit of ‘together we grow’.”
Upcoming Leaders’ Retreat with Malaysia
Looking at international ties, PM Wong will make an official visit to Putrajaya from 6 to 7 January 2024 for the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat. This gathering aims to reinforce bilateral cooperation.
- Wong and Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim will sign several key agreements, focusing on economic collaboration and other vital areas including education and climate change.
- The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is among significant agreements expected to boost economic ties.
Wong, accompanied by various ministers, aims to deepen Singapore’s comprehensive partnerships with Malaysia—building on a trade relationship worth around US$92.1 billion in 2023.
