SINGAPORE: The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has announced a significant shift in its leadership following the disappointing results of the 2025 General Election. Founding members Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Hazel Poa, along with Treasurer S Nallakaruppan, have stepped down from the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).
New Leadership Dynamics
Mr A’bas bin Kasmani will take over as chairman from Dr Tan, showcasing a move towards rejuvenating the party’s leadership. Meanwhile, the CEC has welcomed three new members: Sani Ismail, Lawrence Pek, and Stephanie Tan, all of whom recently ran as candidates in the 2025 elections.
Election Results and Aftermath
- PSP contested in six constituencies and unfortunately lost in all.
- The party witnessed a substantial drop in vote share—39.99% in West Coast-Jurong West GRC versus 48.32% in 2020.
- This decline ended the party’s presence in Parliament, as both Poa and Leong Mun Wai lost their Non-Constituency MP seats.
Reflections on Party Goals
Mr Leong, who remains as secretary-general, described the election results as “very shocking” but emphasised that this departure from active politics does not dampen the party’s commitment. “Our call for checks and balances, an inclusive society and fairer opportunities for all remains unshaken,” he stated.
The PSP is now poised to reflect on the results diligently, seeking ways to regain the trust of Singaporeans and enhance its appeal in future elections.
