Punggol LRT Disruption: Systems Fault Causes Morning Chaos

SINGAPORE: Commuters using the Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT) faced disruptions on 13 September 2024 due to a systems fault that left train services suspended for about three hours.

Transport operator SBS Transit alerted the public via Facebook at approximately 5.15am, advising that free regular and bridging bus services were available at the Punggol Bus Interchange and nearby designated stops.

Previous Disruptions

  • On 15 August 2024, the Sengkang-Punggol LRT experienced a four-hour disruption due to a power fault, affecting all 29 stations on the line.
  • Earlier, on 12 August 2024, another power fault caused a five-hour service outage, impacting both the Sengkang-Punggol LRT and the North East Line.

SBS Transit Group CEO Jeffrey Sim noted that the disruptions were primarily caused by trips in both the main and backup power supply at a depot substation.

In an update shared around 8.10am, the company confirmed the fault had been rectified and regular services resumed, apologising for the inconvenience caused to commuters.

As many rushed to find alternative transport, SBS Transit recommended commuters check their app or the Land Transport Authority’s MyTransport app for real-time updates.

Such incidents have raised concerns about reliability, but SBS Transit continues to advocate for improved service for daily commuters.
