A Malaysian man, Rajwant Singh Gill Narajan Singh, 38, has been convicted on four charges including cheating for sex and extortion after luring women from Singapore to Malaysia. This disturbing case involves the extortion of over S$183,000 (US$140,970) from at least one victim, showcasing his manipulative and predatory behaviour.
How It All Happened
Between 2018 and 2020, Singh devised a scheme where he posed as a wealthy white man on dating platforms like Tinder, advertising himself as a ‘sugar daddy’. He created an enticing facade of living on a yacht in Malaysia and offered attractive sums of money for companionship and sexual activities.
Modus Operandi
- Victims were befriended online and were encouraged to share explicit photos or videos.
- Once lured, he invited them to Malaysia under the pretext of fulfilling the sugar daddy arrangement.
- Upon meeting, Singh impersonated the chauffeur of his fictitious persona and coerced the victims into sexual acts.
- He used threats of disseminating their explicit materials to extort money from them.
A Disturbing Case
Deputy Public Prosecutor Jeremy Bin described Singh’s actions as “horrific and perverse,” implying that had these crimes occurred in Singapore, they could have led to multiple rape charges. Singh’s lawyerless defence claimed that while sexual acts took place, he did not see himself as the sugar daddy.
One victim, who agreed to a monthly sex-for-pay arrangement, recounted the traumatic experience where she was compelled to film herself engaging in sexual acts and was ultimately extorted for a significant amount. Another victim reported lasting trauma, claiming her life and career had been severely impacted by Singh’s actions.
Legal Proceedings
This case drew intense scrutiny and was handled through a joint operation between the Singapore Police Force and the Royal Malaysian Police Force, leading to Singh’s arrest. Following multiple confessions concerning the nature of his crimes, Singh has been labelled “effectively a serial rapist” by the prosecution.
Sentencing for Singh has been deferred until January, with calls for a sentence of 13 years in prison and 15 strokes of the cane, reflecting the gravity of the offences committed.
