Road Safety Under Scrutiny After Two Separate Accidents in Singapore

Singapore’s roads witnessed two serious accidents in swift succession, raising concerns about safety and compliance among heavy vehicle drivers.

Tuas Viaduct Incident

In the early hours of 2 December 2024, a 37-year-old male tipper truck driver was taken conscious to hospital following an accident involving a tipper truck and a cement mixer along Tuas Viaduct.

  • The accident was reported to authorities at approximately 3.35 a.m.
  • The driver was conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for treatment.
  • A video documented the tipper truck tipped on its side, spilling soil onto the road, and damage to the truck’s front bumper as well as the viaduct’s railings.

Authorities noted that an excavator was deployed at the scene to clear the debris while police investigations are ongoing.

Motorcyclist Accident on the PIE

The following day, on 3 December 2024, a 28-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital unconscious after skidding along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards the Changi slip road into Lorong 2 Toa Payoh.

  • This incident occurred around 6.40 a.m., and the biker was later taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
  • The police and Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted promptly.

Investigations are also underway for this accident as the emergency services responded to the scene.

Focus on Road Safety Compliance

These incidents come amid heightened scrutiny over road safety compliance, particularly regarding heavy vehicles. The traffic police recently announced strict enforcement actions against vehicle owners who do not adhere to the requirement to install speed limiters. With 30% of heavy vehicles non-compliant as of mid-November, the push for safer roads is more urgent than ever.

As the number of accidents raises alarms, it’s crucial for all drivers to observe road safety measures strictly — after all, it’s better to be safe than sorry on our busy roads!
