SCDF Launches New Marine Rescue Vessel ‘Blue Dolphin’ to Enhance Singapore’s Maritime Safety

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has officially launched its new second-generation Marine Rescue Vessel, the Blue Dolphin, bolstering maritime emergency response capabilities on 25 June 2024. Based at the West Coast Marine Fire Station, this vessel is poised to tackle major incidents at sea, ranging from fires to hazardous material emergencies.

Key Features of the Blue Dolphin

  • Length and Speed: Approximately 3m longer than its predecessor, the Red Dolphin, with a top speed of 30 knots (about 56 km/h).
  • Firefighting Capacity: Equipped with three fire monitors that can discharge up to 4,800 cubic metres of water per hour.
  • Crew Capacity: Houses a crew of up to 14, including four navigational crew members and ten marine specialists.
  • Advanced Systems: Features an Integrated Command Centre, an advanced navigational system, and a chemical, biological, and radiological system with state-of-the-art sensors.
  • Sustainability: Incorporates an integrated solar panel charging system and is powered by biofuel-compatible engines.

Improvements in Maritime Operations

With the growing cruise industry, including the arrival of larger vessels like the Disney Cruise Line in late 2025, the Blue Dolphin’s capabilities are timed perfectly. Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, Edwin Tong, emphasised the vessel’s role within a rapidly evolving maritime landscape. By 2040, Singapore aims to operate one of the largest container ports globally at Tuas, setting a need for enhanced marine safety measures.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, SCDF plans to expand its fleet to ten vessels by 2030, supported by a new Marine Division Headquarters at Brani, with completion slated for early 2026. A Marine Fire Post at Northshore Crescent in Punggol is also on the horizon, expected to improve maritime coverage by 2028.

As stated by Assistant Commissioner Ryan Ong, the Blue Dolphin is the first of four vessels to be developed over the coming years to strengthen SCDF’s capability in safeguarding Singapore’s waters, ensuring that the maritime response remains efficient and safe.
