Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong Stresses Unity Amid Global Trade Challenges

SINGAPORE – Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered a clear message on unity and resilience during his speech at the Kebun Baru Sunday Carnival on 6 April 2024. With global uncertainties rising due to new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, he emphasised the need for Singaporeans to come together and not be swayed by ‘strange ideas or soft solutions’.

Call for Collective Effort

“In Singapore, we have to work together as one people, closely with the Government,” said SM Lee. He called on residents to approach the future with solidarity and resolve. He remarked, “It’s our future, our problems. We worry about it.”

Impact of Recent Tariffs

Lee’s comments echo Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s earlier message highlighting how the recent tariffs could reshape trade dynamics.

  • 10% tariff on imports from Singapore
  • Up to 54% levy on Chinese imports
  • Significant tariffs imposed on the European Union, Japan, and India

These changes are expected to have profound repercussions on Singapore’s economy, prompting leaders to communicate the seriousness of the situation to residents.

SG60 and Future Commitment

In light of Singapore’s 60th year of independence, SM Lee encouraged citizens to view this milestone as a moment for commitment and action to ensure continued safety and success.

“Put your hand on your heart and say: We prepare ourselves to keep on working to make Singapore better,” he urged.

Community Engagement

Throughout the carnival, Lee engaged with local residents, promoting a sense of community. He urged attendees to collaborate with the Government and trust their elected representatives for a prosperous future.

Furthermore, MP Henry Kwek shared insights on ongoing community projects designed to enhance local facilities, including upgrades to the Ang Mo Kio ActiveSG Swimming Complex and the Mayflower Market.

As SM Lee succinctly put it, “Keep on working hard. Keep on working together.”
