Beachgoers at Sentosa are staying dry after a crocodile was spotted near Sentosa Cove on 31 January 2024, prompting the closure of water activities at Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong Beaches.
The sighting, which occurred at 6:25 PM, led to immediate actions from the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) and the National Parks Board (NParks). According to SDC, a joint team was quickly formed to search for the reptile, with respected monitoring and patrols in place.
Public Safety Precautions
While the beaches remain open for sunbathing and relaxing, swimming, kayaking, and other water activities have been suspended until further notice. The public is advised to follow safety signs and instructions given on-site.
- Should you encounter a crocodile:
- Stay calm and back away slowly.
- Avoid approaching, provoking, or feeding the animal.
- Report sightings to NParks’ Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600.
Mixed Reactions from Visitors
Visitors were initially excited about the crocodile sighting. Ms. Sasha Zhukova, a resident nearby, remarked on the thrill of spotting the reptile, noting that such wildlife encounters are uncommon in her native Russia. However, the excitement quickly shifted to caution as she declared she wouldn’t risk going into the water for some time.
Many beachgoers remained unaware of the restrictions until they arrived. Ms. Juliana Irwani expressed disappointment over not being able to swim during her friend’s birthday celebration, although she found solace in enjoying the sun and company instead.
Ongoing Monitoring
In light of the situation, SDC stated this is the first reported crocodile sighting in Sentosa’s waters. They emphasised the ongoing search efforts and increased safety measures, including the installation of warning signs at key locations along the beaches.
Despite the restrictions, some beach facilities, like the MegaZip flying fox, are still operational, allowing visitors to enjoy other aspects of Sentosa.
As Singapore’s shores sometimes host unexpected wildlife, the authorities remain vigilant to ensure safety while preserving the stunning coastal experience that draws many to this iconic destination.
