Singapore Community in Hong Kong Raises Funds for Fire Victims at Wang Fuk Court

The Singaporean community in Hong Kong has come together to raise HK$1.8 million (S$304,000) for the victims of a devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, which claimed at least 160 lives and devastated countless families.

This fundraising effort was a collective initiative involving the Singapore International School (Hong Kong), the Singapore Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong), the Singapore Association Hong Kong, and the Singapore Consulate-General in Hong Kong. The funds will be directed to the Hong Kong government’s support fund established for the victims.

Community Support During Tragedy

In a joint press release, the organisations expressed their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. They highlighted the brave efforts of the firefighters and rescue workers who responded during the critical time.

  • Amount Raised: HK$1.8 million (S$304,000)
  • Fire Duration: More than 40 hours
  • Casualties: At least 160 dead, thousands displaced

According to the press release, many Hong Kong-based Singapore companies and individuals have also contributed to the relief efforts immediately following the disaster. The tragic incident erupted on 26 November 2023, rapidly engulfing seven of the eight apartment blocks due to highly flammable materials.

Ongoing Investigations

As investigations unfold, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has formed a task force to look into possible corruption linked to the renovations of the affected buildings. According to initial reports, the external walls were inadequately protected, raising serious questions about fire safety regulations.

Consul-General Eric Teo remarked, “Both cities enjoy robust cooperation and very warm people-to-people ties. It is heartening that the Singapore community in Hong Kong can come together during these tough times.”

The Hong Kong people’s “Lion Rock Spirit”—a term embodying their resilience—was a recurring theme in the statements from the Singapore community, offering solidarity and support to those impacted by this catastrophic event.
