SMRT Addresses Recent Power Faults on Bukit Panjang LRT Line

Trains on the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) system faced major disruptions due to power faults, impacting commuters twice in July 2024. SMRT confirmed that these issues were associated with a newly installed power distribution system.

Details of the Disruptions

The first disruption occurred on 3 July, where all stations were without service for about three hours. A second incident took place on 19 July, causing a two-hour halt in train operations.

During both instances, four trains were stranded between stations, compelling SMRT staff to assist with a safe detrainment process.

Immediate Response

  • SMRT activated free bridging bus services for affected passengers.
  • Announcements were made in trains and at stations to keep commuters informed.
  • Engineers were deployed on-site to resolve the issues.

SMRT’s president, Lam Sheau Kai, expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused to commuters.

Investigations Underway

Both disruptions have been linked to the new Power SCADA system, part of the Power Renewal Project by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). This system is designed to remotely monitor power distribution across the LRT network.

A thorough investigation, including a full design review by Schneider Electric, the original equipment manufacturer contractor, is in progress to enhance network stability and prevent similar occurrences in the future. The project is on track to be completed by the end of 2026.

Commitment to Safety

SMRT reassured commuters of their commitment to maintaining safe and reliable services during the renewal works, thanking everyone for their understanding during these disruptions.
