Soh Rui Yong Cleared to Compete in 2025 SEA Games After Health Scare

SINGAPORE: Distance runner Soh Rui Yong has received the green light to compete in the upcoming 2025 SEA Games, following a recent medical scare that raised concerns about his participation. This news comes as a relief just days ahead of the biennial multi-sport event scheduled from 9 to 20 December 2025.

Health Assessment Results

According to a statement from Singapore Athletics (SA), the 34-year-old athlete was referred for a specialist cardiology assessment after an irregular finding was detected during his routine pre-Games health screening. The assessment confirmed that Soh is fit to compete, with no cardiac issues that might hinder his performance.

Recent Achievements

  • Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon: Soh clinched the national championship title in both the marathon and half-marathon events on 6 and 7 December respectively.
  • Medal History: He previously ended Singapore’s 40-year wait for a SEA Games medal by winning silver in the men’s 10,000m event in Cambodia in 2023.

Upcoming Events in Bangkok

Soh is set to compete for Team Singapore in the men’s 5,000m final on 13 December and the men’s 10,000m final on 16 December at the National Stadium in Bangkok. Despite qualifying for additional events, he has decided to focus solely on the 10,000m final.

Reflecting on the recent developments, Soh stated, “I’ve been running for so many years, so I knew I was okay. I think in the back of my head, I knew I would get to compete…” He appreciated the support from the SA team amid the last-minute health clearance process.
