State Visits to Singapore: Poland’s Duda and Indonesia’s Prabowo Strengthen Ties in June 2024

SINGAPORE: June 2024 has seen significant diplomatic activity with high-profile state visits from two European and Southeast Asian leaders, Polish President Andrzej Duda and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. These visits highlight the importance of international relations and cooperation in several domains.

Polish President Andrzej Duda’s Visit

On 13 June 2024, Polish President Andrzej Duda concluded a three-day state visit to Singapore, marking the first occurrence of such a visit in over 20 years. During his time here, he engaged in discussions with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam about enhancing collaboration in fields like logistics, sustainable energy, and agri-food exports.

  • President Duda expressed interest in deepening ties with Southeast Asia.
  • Bilateral trade between Singapore and Poland has surged since the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, reaching nearly S$1.7 billion (US$1.3 billion) last year.
  • During the Singapore-Poland Business Forum, Minister Grace Fu highlighted the potential for new partnerships, especially in food and digital technology.

Mr Duda also had the pleasure of unveiling a hybrid orchid named in honour of him and his wife at the National Orchid Garden. This visit serves not only to bolster economic relations but also to affirm Poland’s commitment to engaging with the region.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s Visit

Following closely, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to arrive for a two-day state visit from 15 June 2024. His visit is notable as it will be his first since taking office in October last year.

  • Mr Prabowo will participate in a ceremonial welcome and a state banquet hosted by President Tharman.
  • The visit includes the 8th Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat, a platform for both leaders to strengthen bilateral ties, reviewing current cooperation and setting future agendas.
  • Significant agreements, including memoranda on cross-border electricity trade and carbon capture, are expected to be discussed.

Singapore has consistently been Indonesia’s top source of foreign investment, and the two nations share robust relations reflecting collaboration in defence and the green economy. In fact, last year alone saw an impressive US$20.1 billion investment from Singapore into Indonesia.

Both leaders’ visits in June 2024 signify a strengthening of diplomatic relationships in Southeast Asia and beyond, with both focusing on building economic growth and stability.
