Tanker Collision Near Tanah Merah: Marine Gas Oil Spillage Detected

A Singapore-flagged tanker, named Marine Dynamo, collided with a Malta-registered bulk carrier, Flag Gangos, on 1 September 2024, resulting in a minor oil spill off the coast of Tanah Merah. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed the collision took place at approximately 9.25am, about 8 km south of the shore.

Incident Overview

The collision has led to the spillage of marine gas oil (MGO), which is stored in the ship’s service tank above the waterline. MGO is a light fuel, akin to diesel, and is expected to evaporate and break down quickly in the environment.

Casualties and Response

  • One crew member aboard Marine Dynamo sustained minor injuries, which were treated on board.
  • All crew from both vessels are confirmed safe and accounted for.

Environmental Measures

Following the incident, light oil sheens were observed around the affected vessel. The MPA has deployed patrol and spill response craft to manage the situation, including efforts to disperse the oil sheens. Drones have also been utilised for ongoing monitoring.

Navigation Safety

MPA assured that navigational safety remains unaffected. A navigational broadcast was issued to alert passing vessels about the incident. An investigation is underway to understand the circumstances surrounding the collision.

As the situation develops, MPA will continue to monitor and address the impacts of the spill.
