In a concerning rise of scam activities, three individuals aged between 16 and 31 were arrested for their alleged roles in fake bulk order scams impersonating personnel from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). The arrests, made on 16 September 2024, highlight the ongoing vigilance of local authorities regarding fraudulent activities.
Details of the Arrests
According to the police, the operation involved raids conducted at various locations, including Middle Road, Woodlands Street 81, and Cantonment Road. During this two-day effort, several electronic devices and prepaid cards were seized, indicating a well-organised scam syndicate.
- Three suspects were arrested: a 16-year-old male, a 22-year-old female, and a 31-year-old male.
- The two younger suspects allegedly provided their bank accounts to the syndicate for monetary gain.
- The older suspect is said to have facilitated the acquisition of phone lines, some directly linked to the scams.
Impact on Local Businesses
The scams have resulted in significant financial losses for affected businesses, totalling at least $32,000 across five known cases reported since 4 September. Notable victims include:
- A hawker stall in Tiong Bahru, which prepared 150 packets of briyani.
- A florist in Bukit Timah, conned into producing large floral orders.
- A bakery located along Thomson Road, unprepared for the sheer volume of fraudulent requests.
Warning from Authorities
In light of these incidents, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has clarified that there is no connection between these scams and the SAF. They have urged businesses to remain alert, especially when approached with bulk orders that seem suspicious.
Police have reiterated the potential legal consequences for anyone who allows others to misuse their bank accounts or mobile lines, emphasising accountability. The woman arrested in this case will face charges in court for her actions, which could result in a jail term or a fine.
As the investigation continues, authorities are calling on the public to report any dubious activity, reminding everyone that ignorance can lead to being an unwilling accomplice.
