At least 43 individuals, including 15 children, have perished in devastating flash floods that struck central Texas, with rescuers still searching for those unaccounted for. The catastrophic incident unfolded on 5 July 2024, as heavy rains devastated the region, particularly around the Guadalupe River.
Destruction Unfolds
The flooding began unexpectedly, with about 15 inches of rain falling in a short span, causing river levels to rise dramatically—up to 29 feet in some areas. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed that 32 people were initially reported dead, with the numbers likely to rise as searches for 27 missing girls from the Camp Mystic summer camp continue.
- Confirmed dead: 32
- Missing: 27 girls from Camp Mystic
- Evacuated: 850 individuals
- Injuries reported: 8
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
Despite search teams being dispatched via air and ground, Laurie Leitha noted the efforts are hampered by debris and treacherous conditions. “We will continue the search until all those who are missing are found,” said Texas Department of Emergency Management chief Nim Kidd during a press briefing.
Survivors share harrowing experiences. Tonia Fucci, who witnessed the devastation, stated, “I’m still in shock … You just want them to be found for the sake of the families.” Many of the camp’s girls were unaccounted for when the storm struck, as families struggled to understand the scale of the disaster.
The Aftermath
Images and videos show entire homes being washed away, with authorities warning against travel to the affected areas. Mayor Joe Herring urged the community to band together during this challenging time, expressing, “People need to know today will be a hard day. It will be a hard day.” With more rain expected, the situation remains precarious.
Government Response
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced he would expand the state disaster declaration and seek additional federal resources. As the community rallies to support those affected, the pain of loss weighs heavily on those who have not yet received word on the missing.
Local officials have urged caution as the floods have compromised infrastructure, creating dangerous conditions for both rescuers and residents.
