SINGAPORE: A tragic fire on Wednesday, 13 August 2024, has left two individuals dead and four others needing hospital care at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded promptly to the blaze at Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah.
Details of the Incident
The SCDF was alerted to the fire at approximately 4pm. Upon their arrival, they found flames engulfing the living room and bedroom of a fourth-floor unit. Firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the blaze using a water jet.
Casualties and Evacuations
- A 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were discovered unresponsive in the kitchen.
- Both victims were transported to SGH, where they were later pronounced dead.
- Two residents from adjacent units were also taken to SGH—one for smoke inhalation and another who felt unwell.
- As a safety precaution, around 60 residents from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF.
Ongoing Investigations
While the investigation into the cause of the fire is still underway, preliminary reports from the police indicate no suspicion of foul play. The community is left shaken as they grapple with the loss.
