Tragic Floods in North Sumatra: Search for Missing Continues

Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in North Sumatra, Indonesia, leading to devastating flash floods and landslides that have claimed at least 27 lives. Rescuers are on a mission to locate the missing, as the region grapples with the aftermath of the extreme weather.

Impact of the Severe Weather

The relentless rains began on 23 November 2024, resulting in mudslides in various districts, notably Karo, Padang Lawas, and Deli Serdang. Initial reports indicated that eleven people perished in landslides, while four drowned in flash floods. By 28 November, the death toll rose significantly as search operations intensified.

Rescue Operations Underway

About a hundred firefighters, police, and military personnel are involved in the ongoing search effort. Unfortunately, persistent rain continues to hinder their progress. Mr Hadi Wahyudi, a North Sumatra police spokesperson, commented, “It’s still raining from the afternoon until the evening. This is the main obstacle while we try to locate the missing people.” The search is particularly focusing on a minibus buried in mud, along with multiple vehicles trapped by the landslides.

Affected Areas and Damage

  • Houses and mosques have been severely damaged.
  • Rice fields have also suffered, disrupting local agriculture.
  • Road access to several villages has been cut off.

Heavy rains have caused similar troubles in Medan, the provincial capital, delaying regional election votes in certain polling stations.

Future Weather Forecast

According to Indonesia’s meteorological agency, the La NiƱa phenomenon could lead to even more severe weather conditions towards the end of 2024. Residents are being urged to remain vigilant as further floods may be imminent.

As the situation develops, authorities are hopeful for a resolution as efforts continue to clear roads and locate individuals still unaccounted for.
