SINGAPORE — On 21 October 2024, the tranquility of Clementi Avenue 4 was shattered when a grassroots volunteer was fatally attacked by a fellow resident. The victim, 41-year-old Winson Khoo, succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted by a 50-year-old man.
The shocking incident unfolded in the late afternoon near the pick-up point between Blocks 311B and 311C, right in front of the Trivelis Residents’ Network office. Eyewitness accounts reveal that Khoo tripped near a drain about 20 metres from the office before the assailant pursued him.
Witnesses were horrified as Khoo’s wife screamed during the attack, desperately trying to stop the assailant along with a nearby parking attendant. A bystander can be heard shouting for someone to call the police as chaos erupted.
Amidst the frantic scene, a female medical worker who lived in the area rushed to help Khoo, providing chest compressions in a bid to revive him. Videos shared by locals captured the distressing moments of the attack, including the cries of “sorry, sorry” from the suspect.
Details of the Incident
According to residents, the assailant later turned his aggression towards Khoo’s wife, forcing her to flee for safety into a preschool at Block 311C. After the attack, the suspect drove his black car into a multi-storey carpark, where he allegedly reversed into another vehicle before being apprehended by the police.
Both men were well-known within the estate, with Khoo frequently engaging in grassroots activities, serving as vice-chairman of the Trivelis Residents’ Network. Sadly, the attack has left the community in shock.
Community Reaction
The People’s Association expressed deep sadness over Khoo’s death and announced that his wake would begin on 23 October 2024. They also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic footage or images related to the incident.
Local MP Sim Ann was on-site that evening, comforting distressed residents and later connecting with Khoo’s family to offer support. When approached by reporters, Khoo’s family, visibly shaken, requested privacy as they mourned their loss.
As investigations continue, preliminary findings suggest the assailant and Khoo were acquaintances. The suspect is set to face serious charges, including murder, which could have dire legal consequences.
