A New Zealand father, Tom Phillips, was shot dead by police after a lengthy manhunt that spanned nearly four years. The dramatic turn of events unfolded on 8 September 2024, as authorities attempted to apprehend him following a failed robbery attempt alongside one of his children.
Robbery and Shootout
Around 2:30 AM local time, police responded to reports of a robbery at a rural store in Piopio, Waikato. Phillips, who has been on the run since December 2021, allegedly opened fire on police, injuring one officer critically before being shot himself. He was found at the scene, with a rifle nearby, and despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
According to New Zealand Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers, the officer shot by Phillips was airlifted to hospital for surgery, and thankfully, the injuries were described as survivable.
Children’s Fate Uncertain
At the time of the confrontation, one of Phillips’ children was present and has since been taken into custody. They are reportedly unharmed and aiding police in the investigation. Concerns remain for Phillips’ other two children, aged nine and ten, who are still missing. Police have initiated an extensive search operation to locate them, with approximately fifty officers involved.
A Community Divided
The Phillips case has garnered significant media attention, especially in the communities of Marokopa and Piopio. Over the years, opinions about Phillips were split; some residents sympathised with him, while others viewed him as a criminal. Law enforcement suspected Phillips had support from locals, assisting him during his time on the run. However, it appears that his network may have weakened in recent weeks, resulting in more desperate actions like the robbery.
A Mother’s Relief and Sadness
Cat, the mother of the children, expressed a mix of emotions regarding the outcome of these events. “They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care,” she stated. She also asked for privacy for the children as they transition back to a stable environment after their tumultuous journey.
As search efforts continue, many in the community are left to ponder the complex dynamics that led to this tragic ending.
