Trevi Fountain’s New Walkway: An Up-Close Experience for Tourists

A new suspended walkway offering a closer view of Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain has been unveiled, allowing visitors to appreciate the Baroque masterpiece while restoration work is carried out. Set to last until December 2024, the walkway is a temporary yet innovative way to experience one of Rome’s most celebrated sites without the usual crowds.

Unique Vista Amidst Restoration

According to Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, the structure will host up to 130 people at a time, providing a unique perspective often missed during busy tourist hours. Gualtieri stated, “We wanted to give everybody the opportunity to admire the fountain and to do this from a unique perspective… what you can see from the walkway, you will never be able to see normally.”

Cleaning Efforts Underway

The fountain is undergoing extensive cleaning to combat years of grime and calcium deposits affecting its facade. Since its last major restoration in 2014, the fountain needed attention to remove dirt and pollutants that have accumulated over the years.

  • Normal maintenance will involve:
  • Removal of dirt, pollution, and iron oxide.
  • Cleaning of limestone deposits to restore original aesthetics.

A Change to the Coin Toss Tradition

While visitors will be prohibited from tossing coins into the fountain during this period—traditionally believed to ensure a return to Rome—authorities have set up a temporary pool to collect donations. Funds collected will continue to support local charities, with about €10,000 collected weekly for Caritas to assist those in need.

Future Plans for Visitor Access

The city’s officials are contemplating a ticketing system after the restoration work is complete, particularly with the anticipated increase in visitors during 2025’s Jubilee year—a significant event expected to draw over 30 million visitors to Rome.

Until then, tourists can enjoy this unique opportunity to marvel at the majestic fountain up close—an experience only possible through this temporary walkway.
