SINGAPORE — In a fresh twist for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts, Tribecar has announced the launch of a new rental fleet branded as ‘Le Blu Frenchy’, repurposing former BlueSG cars. This move follows BlueSG’s decision to pause its services from 8 August 2024, ahead of a planned relaunch in 2026.
Rolling Out the Red Carpet
According to Tribecar, the bright yellow vehicles, reminiscent of BlueSG’s distinctive Bolloré Bluecar, are set to offer longer-term rental options instead of the point-to-point service that BlueSG provided. These leases span from three months to two years.
- Monthly rental prices will range from S$888 (US$692) to S$958.
- Options include access to TotalEnergies Blue charging lots and accident insurance.
- Unlike the previous service, rented cars can be charged at any charging operator.
Assurance on Vehicle Quality
Responding to concerns about the age of the repurposed vehicles, a Tribecar spokesperson assured that all cars will undergo rigorous upgrades and inspections by certified engineers to meet safety standards. If a vehicle isn’t driveable for over two days, a replacement will be provided.
Collaboration Ahead
Keith Kee, CEO of BlueSG, confirmed discussions with Tribecar about a potential sale of their electric vehicles, emphasizing a shared commitment to sustainability and carbon emission reduction. However, he did not provide specific numbers on how many vehicles are involved.
Promises of Affordability
Adrian Lee, co-founder of Tribecar, indicated strong interest since the announcement, noting that the first 10 two-year leases will cost S$799 a month, providing a notable discount from the standard rate. By offering a more affordable alternative to typical EV rentals in Singapore, which often exceed S$2,000 per month, Tribecar hopes to enhance access to environmentally friendly transportation.
The cars in this new fleet are said to be between two and five years old, with mileage ranging from 50,000km to low six-digit figures. With BlueSG’s current fleet at 692 cars, Tribecar’s move signals a significant moment in Singapore’s EV car-sharing landscape.
