Vietnam Celebrates National Day with Generous Cash Gifts and Historic Amnesty
As Vietnam gears up for its 80th National Day on 2 September 2024, the government has announced an unprecedented cash distribution and a record-setting prisoner release, stirring excitement across the nation.
Cash Gifts to Citizens
The Vietnamese government plans to distribute 100,000 dong (around S$5) to every citizen. This initiative, aimed at marking the national holiday, could cost up to S$488 million. The elderly, the young, and new parents alike will benefit from this generous gesture, which officials say reflects their deep concern for the people.
- Payments could be issued via bank transfer or cash.
- The central bank along with the finance ministry is tasked to complete these payments before the festivities.
- Residents express mixed feelings; for some, it’s a small but welcome boon.
Hanoi resident Pham Tien Luat remarked, “I thought it was just a hoax at first,” adding he plans to spend the money on three cups of coffee.
Record Prisoner Amnesty Ahead of Celebrations
In a separate but equally significant announcement, Vietnam is set to release nearly 14,000 prisoners, including 66 foreigners, as part of the country’s long-standing tradition of amnesties during national celebrations. This marks the largest single-year release in history.
- The amnesty excludes those convicted of serious political crimes, such as “attempting to overthrow” the government.
- Among the detainees due for release are individuals from 18 different nationalities, including citizens from China, the United States, and Australia.
- As stated by Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Van Tuyen, this year’s total represents the largest number of prisoners released since record-keeping began.
With National Day parades planned in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, public transport will also be free, further enhancing the festive spirit across the country.
Excitement is palpable as citizens look forward to both receiving unexpected cash and hearing from freed inmates, as Vietnam embraces a momentous milestone in its history.
