In 2024, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported a worrying rise in fires involving Active Mobility Devices (AMDs), up by 21.8 per cent from the previous year. As the nation grapples with increased incidents, safety checks and educational efforts are on the rise to address these hazards.
Fires Involving AMDs on the Rise
According to the SCDF, there were 67 recorded fires involving AMDs, including power-assisted bicycles and personal mobility devices, in 2024, a significant jump from 55 in 2023. This surge marks the second consecutive year of increased cases.
- In 2023, AMD fires were already up 31 per cent from 42 fires in 2022.
- 44 of the AMD fires occurred in residential areas, further intensifying concerns.
Common Culprits of Fires
The SCDF noted that problematic electrical wiring and unattended cooking remain top causes of residential fires. In homes, there were:
- 335 cases of unattended cooking incidents in 2024, down from 384 in 2023.
- 299 fires due to electrical faults—an 8.3 per cent rise from the previous year.
Calls for Public Safety Awareness
SCDF stresses the importance of using certified AMDs, advising the public to:
- Purchase devices with UL2272 certification.
- Avoid leaving devices charging unattended, especially overnight.
- Steer clear of combustible materials during charging.
Following several tragic incidents that resulted in fatalities, such as a fire that claimed the lives of two individuals and another that killed a 79-year-old woman, ongoing safety campaigns are essential.
Increasing Emergency Call Volume
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) faced a slight reduction in call volume, receiving 245,279 calls in 2024, down by 0.6 per cent from 2023. However, the SCDF noted a significant rise in community support through the myResponder app, which facilitates quicker responses to emergencies.
- 80 of the EMS calls were injury-related in 2024, in comparison to 81 in the previous year.
- The response rate of community first responders improved, rising from 43.8 per cent to 50.3 per cent.
Focus on Prevention and Compliance
To combat the growing problem of AMD-related fires, the SCDF is collaborating with the National Fire and Emergency Preparedness Council to enhance public education and safety enforcement. Regular compliance checks will also ensure that buildings adhere to fire safety regulations.
For residents and device users, the message is clear: prioritise safety, avoid modifications to devices, and stay informed about fire hazards. After all, safety should never be underestimated.
