In a triumphant revelation, Singapore has emerged as the least corrupt nation in the Asia-Pacific region, as noted in the 2024 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released on 11 February 2024. It’s the first time since 2010 that Singapore has achieved this status, overtaking New Zealand, which had held the top spot for 14 years.
Impressive Rankings
Singapore not only leads the region but is also ranked third globally, improving from fifth place in previous years. The index evaluates 180 countries based on their perceived levels of public sector corruption, awarded scores from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
- Singapore’s score: 84 points, up from 83 in 2023.
- First place: Denmark (90 points).
- Second place: Finland (88 points).
Consistent Growth
Since 1995, Singapore has maintained a top 10 position on this index, with the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) emphasising that this accolade is a result of the public’s commitment to reporting corruption. According to the CPIB, “Our people continue to hold a strong stance against corruption, and will come forward to report wrongdoings to the authorities.”
Regional Leadership
Beyond the CPI, Singapore ranked first in the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy’s 2024 report on corruption, a position it has held since 1995. Moreover, the nation secured the third position globally in the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index 2024 for its absence of corruption.
As Singaporeans, we can take pride in our nation’s achievements. This recognition not only highlights effective governance but also reflects a societal commitment to integrity and transparency.
