Train Service Adjustments: Essential Upgrades for East-West Line and Sengkang-Punggol LRT

Commuters using Singapore’s East-West Line (EWL) and Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) should prepare for some service disruptions as essential upgrading works kick off in the coming months. This announcement was made by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), SMRT, and SBS Transit in a joint statement.

Service Suspension on the East-West Line

No train services will be available between Tanah Merah and Expo MRT stations from 14 to 17 March 2024. This temporary suspension is necessary to disconnect train tracks linking the EWL to Changi Depot, following the successful operationalisation of the East Coast Integrated Depot in December 2025.

  • Shuttle bus service will run every five to eight minutes between Tanah Merah and Expo stations during this period.
  • Train services between Expo and Changi Airport will continue to operate at seven-minute intervals during peak hours.
  • Commuters are encouraged to use public bus services for alternative connections.

Sengkang West Inner Loop Closure

The Sengkang West Inner Loop will also see closures from 19 April to 18 October 2024. This six-month suspension is aimed at enhancing capacity and reliability through major modifications and the installation of new signalling systems.

  • During this time, regular bus services will still be available.
  • Two-car Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) will operate on the Sengkang West Outer Loop to increase capacity.
  • A shuttle bus service from Sengkang Bus Interchange will run during weekday peak periods, operating from 6 am to 10 am and 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm at three to five-minute intervals.

Commuters tapping the shuttle service before 7:30 am or between 9 am and 9:45 am will be eligible for the Travel Smart Journeys programme, providing cost savings equivalent to those travelling outside peak hours. The shuttle service starts on 13 April 2024, allowing commuters to get used to the new arrangement.

Crowd marshals will be present to assist commuters throughout these adjustments, and the public can stay updated via the LTA’s MyTransport.SG mobile app and the social media channels of LTA, SMRT, and SBS Transit.
