Singaporeans Warned to Exercise Caution in Mexico and Iran Amid Security Concerns

Singaporeans overseas are being urged to exercise vigilance and reconsider their travel plans following serious security incidents in both Mexico and Iran, as advised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Caution in Mexico

In a recent update, Singaporeans in Mexico have been advised to practice a high degree of caution and, where possible, avoid high-risk states after the violent aftermath of cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera’s death. Known for his leadership of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Oseguera was reported killed during a military operation, sparking widespread violence across several states, including:

  • Jalisco
  • Tamaulipas
  • Michoacan
  • Guerrero
  • Nuevo Leon

Following his death, the situation has escalated into chaos, with cartel members engaging in violent confrontations with security forces, leading to numerous fatalities. Singaporeans are advised to:

  • Stay vigilant and monitor local news
  • Heed the advice of local authorities
  • Avoid large gatherings, protests, and demonstrations
  • Pursue comprehensive travel and medical insurance
  • eRegister with the MFA to keep abreast of safety updates

Safety Advisory for Iran

Similarly, Singaporeans currently in Iran are urged to evacuate as soon as feasible. The MFA has noted the heightened tensions due to ongoing nationwide demonstrations, which have led to government crackdowns and thousands of casualties. Key points about the situation include:

  • Over 7,000 deaths have been reported amid protests against economic hardships.
  • Singapore has no diplomatic representation in Iran, which limits the consular support available.
  • Citizens are advised to avoid demonstrations and large crowds.

Countries including India and Germany have also directed their nationals to leave Iran amid escalating security risks, with pressure mounting on the Iranian government from various international actors.
