The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has made significant changes in its leadership, announcing that Leong Mun Wai will once again take the helm as secretary-general. This decision comes just ahead of the upcoming General Election, showcasing the party’s renewed ambitions under Leong’s leadership.
Leadership Transition
Leong, who previously served in the role until February 2024, steps back into the position following a leadership reshuffle. He will succeed Hazel Poa, who now holds the title of vice chairman. The new central executive committee (CEC), comprising twelve members, was elected on 20 March 2024, marking an important step for the opposition party.

- Dr Tan Cheng Bock: Founder and Key Figure
Recent Political Context
Leong’s previous term was marred by controversy, as he stepped down due to a correction direction under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA). However, he expressed his gratitude for being given another chance to lead the party, stating, “I’m honoured the CEC asked me to take back the position of sec-gen to lead the party into the elections so that we can scale greater heights.”
Strategic Goals for the Upcoming Elections
Looking ahead, the PSP aims to contest several constituencies in the upcoming election, including new formations like the West Coast-Jurong West GRC and the neighbouring Chua Chu Kang GRC. In the last General Election in 2020, the party garnered significant support, achieving 48.31% of the vote in West Coast GRC, securing two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats.
Future Aspirations
Following this leadership change, Dr Tan has indicated his intention to remain politically active, stating, “As long as I am able and I am still relevant, I will be around.” With Leong at the helm, the PSP is poised to make a formidable bid in the upcoming elections, striving to build on their past successes.
