Candidates from SDA and PAP Gear Up for May Election in Pasir Ris-Changi GRC

SINGAPORE: As the May 3 polls approach, candidates from the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) and the People’s Action Party (PAP) are ramping up their efforts to engage voters in the newly formed Pasir Ris-Changi GRC. With various promises on the table, the elections are set to be a closely contested affair.

SDA’s Commitment to Community

The SDA, which has contested in the Pasir Ris-Punggol area for nearly two decades, remains determined to represent the interests of local residents. Desmond Lim, the SDA chief, shared his long-standing commitment to the community in a recent video address, stating, “From 2006 until now, my resolve from the start has not changed. Let’s work together for our common dreams and aspirations.”

Promises and Proposals

SDA candidates highlighted key issues facing constituents:

  • Job Security: Abu Mohamed pointed out the challenges faced by young degree holders in securing good jobs, advocating for a staggered levy on Employment Pass holders to encourage companies to hire local talent.
  • Housing and Healthcare: Harminder Pal Singh emphasised the need to listen to residents’ concerns, which include affordable housing and healthcare.

PAP’s Vision for Development

Meanwhile, the PAP is focused on revitalising Pasir Ris-Changi and enhancing transport links. Indranee Rajah, leading the PAP team, stated, “To put these plans into action, we need your support. We need your vote.” With promises of better connectivity, new MRT stations, and improved local facilities, the PAP aims to address both national and local issues.

Candidates’ Backgrounds

The PAP team includes:

  • Indranee Rajah: A prominent figure shifting from Tanjong Pagar GRC to anchor the new constituency.
  • Desmond Tan: Aiming to strengthen job security with the help of community initiatives.
  • Valerie Lee: New to the political scene, advocating for the needs of the sandwiched class.
  • Sharael Taha: Continuing his representation from Pasir Ris East with a track record of fighting for grassroots issues.

Challenges Ahead

As Singapore’s political landscape evolves, both parties are preparing for the challenges ahead. The SDA aims to build on its legacy of service, while the PAP focuses on delivering local solutions amidst national concerns. This election isn’t just about politics; it’s about the community and how each party proposes to make life better for the residents of Pasir Ris-Changi.
