Bukit Panjang LRT Set for Service Disruptions to Test New Signalling System

SINGAPORE: Commuters relying on the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) should brace for disruptions on two Sundays—31 August and 21 September 2024—as the system undergoes essential testing of its new signalling technology. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT Trains announced that these closures are critical for integrating the upgraded system, aimed at improving ride reliability and speed control.

What to Expect During the Closures

During these service interruptions, a shuttle bus service, LRT Shuttle B, will be available with a frequency of every five to 15 minutes. Commuters can use regular bus fares, with more details to be provided via notices at all Bukit Panjang LRT stations.

Enhanced Control and Comfort

The new communications-based train control (CBTC) system, similar to what is used on MRT lines, is designed to enable:

  • Better control of train speeds
  • Smoother and more reliable rides

Both agencies emphasised that rigorous testing simulating actual operating conditions will ensure that the new system integrates seamlessly with new third-generation and upgraded second-generation light rail vehicles (LRVs).

Long-Term Upgrades Underway

The renewal programme for the Bukit Panjang LRT, started in 2022, includes:

  • 14 of 19 new third-generation LRVs already in service
  • 11 of 13 older LRVs have been upgraded
  • Completion of the signalling works and full deployment of the remaining LRVs by late 2025

Additionally, all LRT stations will see upgrades to lift facilities. New lifts, set to be introduced from 11 August 2024 and completed by March 2027, will be more user-friendly for wheelchair users, featuring larger buttons, better visibility indicators, and energy-efficient designs.

Local Context Matters

The Bukit Panjang LRT spans 8 kilometres, linking residential areas with connections to the North-South and Downtown MRT lines. It has faced service disruptions recently due to technical issues, underscoring the necessity for the current upgrades.

Singapore’s continuous efforts to improve its public transport systems reflect a commitment to ensuring safety and comfort for all commuters. Keep an eye out for updates at your nearest LRT station!
