SINGAPORE — Firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) faced a daunting task during a blaze at Block 229 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh on 29 July 2024. With the dry rising main in disrepair, they had to manually carry hoses up to the 10th and 11th floors to battle the flames.
The Incident
The fire broke out shortly after 1:10 PM and rapidly engulfed a flat on the 10th floor, spreading to the 11th. During firefighting efforts, SCDF discovered the dry rising main — designed to help firefighters easily access water on upper floors — was not functioning. This forced the team to adapt by connecting hoses directly from the fire engine stationed at ground level.
Challenges on the Scene
- Seven individuals, including a child and a firefighter, were transported to the hospital.
- Firefighters had to navigate smoke-filled staircases, making rescue efforts complex.

Following the incident, MP Saktiandi Supaat announced on Facebook that temporary shelter and essential supplies such as mattresses and water have been arranged for affected households. As of 30 July, power has been restored to most units, although residents on the 10th floor may face delays until at least 4 August.
Residents are urged for better fire safety measures, with one local architect suggesting the need for improved evacuation routes to ensure safety, especially for families with elderly members.
