SINGAPORE: In a dramatic court session on 4 July 2024, Chia Hiok Seah, a 50-year-old man, recounted the shocking events leading up to an incident where he allegedly drove off with the husband of his lover clinging to his car’s bonnet. The altercation took place on 29 June 2024 at a multi-storey car park in Sengkang, sparking serious legal repercussions for Chia.
What Happened That Night?
According to Chia’s testimony, he had initially dropped his lover, Shunyi, off at her home before they decided to head to the car park for some quiet time together. Chia described their activities as ‘intimacy acts’, clarifying that these were not sexual due to Shunyi’s menstrual cycle.
Confrontation and Panic
- Discovery of the Husband: The situation escalated when Shunyi spotted a light and heard banging sounds from outside the vehicle.
- Reaction: Chia recalled that Shunyi panicked, urging him to get them out of the situation. He admitted that he did not initially realise the person outside was Shunyi’s husband, Mr Goh Yong Sern.
- Drive Away: As Mr Goh attempted to break into the car, Chia, filled with fear, drove off with Goh on the bonnet.
Injuries and Consequences
Mr Goh is reported to have sustained multiple injuries, including a facial laceration and abrasions after falling off the bonnet when Chia stopped the car. The prosecution has indicated that if found guilty of causing hurt through a rash act, Chia could face a maximum of one year in jail or a fine up to S$5,000—or both. Additionally, Chia faces a separate charge for public nudity, with potential penalties of three months’ imprisonment or a S$2,000 fine.
Looking Ahead
The court proceedings have attracted significant media attention, and Shunyi is anticipated to testify next. Chia ended his testimony by expressing that the incident was most unfortunate and not characteristic of his usual conduct. As the case unfolds, many await further developments in this unusual and compelling legal saga.
