EU Urges US to Reverse Visa Denials for Palestinian Officials Ahead of UN Assembly

As tensions rise ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the European Union is urging the United States to reconsider its denial of visas to Palestinian officials. This request comes as the bloc’s foreign ministers met in Copenhagen to discuss the implications of the US decision.

Calls for Reconsideration by EU Officials

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, stressed the importance of compliance with international law regarding the participation of all UN members at the assembly. “In light of the existing agreements between the UN and its host state, we all urge for this decision to be reconsidered,” she stated.

  • French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot echoed her sentiments, highlighting that access to a UN General Assembly meeting should not be restricted.
  • Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas had intended to attend but has been affected by this visa denial.

US Position and Controversy

On the US side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that visas would be denied to members of the Palestinian Authority denoting this as a measure to ensure accountability. The State Department indicated this action aligns with US national security interests and underscored the administration’s stance against the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and its attempts to pursue legal action against Israel.

The US government noted, “It is important that all parties remain accountable for their commitments…” This reflects a broader trend within the Trump administration, which has frequently aligned itself with Israeli interests, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts.

Broader Context and Upcoming Developments

As the UN assembly approaches, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to hold a special summit on 22 September 2024, advocating for the recognition of a Palestinian state, which has gained the support of Canada and Australia. Meanwhile, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasised, “It is crucial for all states, including the Palestinians, to have a voice at these discussions.”

With the considerable stakes involved, the upcoming assembly could shape the path for future discussions on peace in the region, particularly following the recent escalations in Gaza that have drawn widespread international concern.
