A recent spate of disruptive activities at People’s Action Party (PAP) Meet-the-People Sessions (MPS) has prompted a strong response from Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam. He addressed the confrontational behaviour of a group calling themselves Monday of Palestine Solidarity, detailing incidents of disruption during his session in Chong Pang on 12 March 2024.
Confrontations at Chong Pang
According to Shanmugam, members of this activist group approached him to discuss the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma). However, tensions escalated when he prioritised needs of waiting residents over their political discussions.
- Two sisters from Punggol confronted him directly.
- During the exchange, one sister reportedly showed her middle finger at a recording individual.
- The activists shouted accusations, causing disruption for other residents seeking assistance.
Response from Minister
Shanmugam expressed his dissatisfaction with the activists’ behaviour, stating, “MPS is not a protest venue.” He emphasised that residents often wait long hours to discuss urgent personal matters ranging from housing to family issues, asserting that hijacking these sessions is a disservice to them.
Wider Impact of Activist Actions
The PAP reports that this group has disrupted over ten MPS across Singapore, including those held by notable ministers like Desmond Lee and Josephine Teo. A spokesperson emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment during these sessions, stating that the weekly MPS serves as a critical lifeline for many Singaporeans in need of assistance.
Community Leaders Weigh In
In light of these events, several leaders from religious organisations have voiced their concerns about the activists’ conduct. Muhammed Azri Azman, President of the Muhammadiyah Association, described the actions as “such a low,” while Ustaz Muhammad Tarmizi Wahid of the Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association condemned the disruption as contrary to faith principles.
Continuing the Conversation
Despite the escalated tensions, Shanmugam spent additional time with the group to find common ground. His commitment to listening and engaging, albeit amid controversy, underscores the importance of dialogue in addressing contentious issues.
As the situation develops, both the PAP and concerned community members continue to advocate for respectful dialogue, encouraging residents to engage with their MPs in a constructive manner.
