Lawrence Wong’s New Cabinet: Emphasis on Unity and Collaboration

In a recent address following the swearing-in of Singapore’s new Cabinet, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong affirmed the government’s commitment to engaging with all Singaporeans. Wong, who led the People’s Action Party (PAP) to secure 65.57% of the vote in the recent election, emphasised the importance of partnering with citizens to shape policies that impact their lives.

Priorities Amid Uncertainty

During the ceremony on 23 May 2024, held at the Istana, Wong outlined the Cabinet’s key priorities as Singapore navigates global uncertainties. He expressed a desire to secure an “assured place” for the nation in a shifting world, primarily focusing on strengthening diplomatic relations with major powers such as the United States and China.

  • Deepen ties with new partners in regions like Africa and South America.
  • Serve as a steady partner in advancing peace and stability.

Addressing Economic Challenges

Wong also laid out an economic blueprint focused on creating opportunities for Singaporeans. In the near term, as global growth slows, the government aims to support businesses and households:

  • Collaboration with tripartite partners to enhance job security.
  • Access to essential services like healthcare and education.

He stated, “Our aim is for every Singaporean to thrive and flourish on their own terms.”

Inclusivity in Governance

The Prime Minister reinforced the spirit of inclusivity, urging his team to listen to varied voices across Singapore. “We will work with unions and civil society to ensure that workers’ views are fully represented,” he stated.

In a notable update, Labour Chief Ng Chee Meng, was temporarily omitted from the Cabinet to focus on his role in the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and as an MP for Jalan Kayu SMC. Wong reassured the public that this was a temporary arrangement, and the government will continue to work closely with the labour movement.

Looking Forward

As Singapore celebrates its 60th year of independence, Wong’s message resonates with hope and determination. Emphasising unity and collaboration, he called on all citizens to play a role in shaping the future of the nation. “With courage, imagination and new resolve, let us build a Singapore that is open, inclusive and full of opportunities,” he concluded.
