Regular train services on Singapore’s MRT East-West Line (EWL) will resume from the start of passenger services on Monday, 8 December 2024, a day ahead of schedule, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). This follows a temporary closure, which began on 29 November, to facilitate essential track connection works to the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID).
Details of the Resumption
During the closure, train services were suspended between Bedok and Tampines stations, as well as from Tanah Merah to Expo stations. The LTA confirmed via a Facebook post that comprehensive testing, including safety and ultrasonic checks, was completed successfully on the tracks, power supply, and signalling systems.
Enhanced Connectivity
- The work involved 12 sites along a 4.8 km stretch of track.
- New tracks have been laid to connect the EWL to the ECID and a new platform at Tanah Merah station.
- Passengers transferring to/from Changi Airport will need to change platforms at Tanah Merah for eastbound EWL trains.
The new platform at Tanah Merah is designed to accommodate changes necessary for the extended Thomson-East Coast Line.
Future Plans for the ECID
Once fully operational, expected in 2026, the ECID will enhance Singapore’s rail network reliability by providing an alternative launch point for EWL trains, allowing for more flexible service adjustments in response to incidents. The existing Changi Depot will be decommissioned in early 2025, shifting all operations to the new integrated depot.
Operational Impact
Although the westbound services toward Tuas Link from Tanah Merah will remain unaffected, this development is part of a significant upgrade to the MRT system that promises better service for all commuters in the years to come.
