The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) is gearing up for a competitive run in the 2025 General Election, particularly in Marymount Single Member Constituency (SMC). Party secretary-general Leong Mun Wai expressed confidence during a recent walkabout at Bishan North Shopping Mall, stating that residents have shown an increasing inclination towards PSP as a credible alternative.
Candidate Strategy and Ground Engagement
During the walkabout on 12 April 2024, Leong explained that while the party is still finalising its candidate lineup, they are eager to represent the concerns and needs of the Marymount community. “We are still looking at what is the best lineup that we can put up with the slate of candidates we have,” he stated.
- PSP intends to contest in several constituencies, including Kebun Baru and Pioneer.
- The announcement comes after a series of timely walkabouts to engage directly with residents.
Reflection on Past Performance
Leong’s optimism stems from the party’s performance in the last election, where Dr Ang Yong Guan narrowly lost to PAP’s Gan Siow Huang, garnering 44.96% of the votes. Unfortunately, Dr Ang will not be contesting this year following a suspension from his medical practice.
Addressing Dr Ang’s departure, Leong firmly stated that PSP is determined to achieve an even better result this time around. “I look forward to a breakthrough this round,” he said, bolstered by positive feedback from the community.
Engagement with Other Candidates
During the walkabout, Leong also encountered Gan Siow Huang, highlighting the friendly rapport between the two. They exchanged smiles, handshakes, and engaged in a brief discussion, signifying a respectful competitive spirit.
With new faces like Sumarleki Amjah joining the fray, PSP aims to solidify its presence in Marymount as it heads toward the elections. The public will have to wait until Nomination Day to discover the full slate of candidates PSP plans to field.
