In a shocking development, a verification officer from the National Environment Agency (NEA) has been charged with corruption for allegedly accepting bribes linked to funeral and cemetery services.
Abdul Salam Jahabar Sadiq, a 47-year-old permanent resident from India, faces serious allegations that could have significant repercussions for the public sector.
The Allegations
According to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Salam is accused of receiving bribes amounting to S$21,000 in the form of loans from ten individuals. These individuals are associated with companies that provide funeral-related and cemetery services.
- Bribes ranged from S$500 to S$5,000 per loan.
- Salam allegedly accepted these bribes between 2022 and 2023.
The bribes were purportedly intended to prevent Salam from reporting any malpractices committed by these companies.
Legal Proceedings
Salam has been hit with ten charges under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, with two charges amalgamated, meaning multiple incidents were combined into a single count. If found guilty, he could face:
- A fine of up to S$100,000.
- A maximum prison term of five years—or both.
For the amalgamated charges, penalties could be even harsher.
NEA’s Response
Following Salam’s arrest, the NEA announced that he has been suspended from duty. A spokesperson conveyed that NEA adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption.
“We expect all officers to comply with the relevant laws and uphold the code of conduct for public officers,” NEA stated. “Stern disciplinary action will be taken for non-compliance.”
Furthermore, NEA is set to pursue follow-up measures against any parties involved in unacceptable practices linked to its facilities.
