New Initiatives for Singapore’s Seniors and Graduates Announced by PM Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE: In a recent National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong introduced two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing support for vulnerable demographics in Singapore—seniors and recent graduates. Both initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of the population amidst economic uncertainties and an ageing society.

Age Well Neighbourhoods for Seniors

The Age Well Neighbourhoods initiative targets elderly residents, launching in Toa Payoh and potentially other areas with a significant senior population. This scheme aims to create supportive living environments for seniors who prefer to age in place, rather than move to assisted facilities.

  • Offers accessibility improvements and enhanced home-based services.
  • Introductory activities include cardio drumming and carpentry workshops— catering to both men and women.
  • Additional care services such as home repairs, health checks, and meal deliveries will be available.

With nearly one quarter of Toa Payoh’s population aged 65 and above, the initiative is timely. Mr Wong highlighted that many seniors wish to remain in their homes due to familiarity and community ties, thus necessitating such supportive measures.

Government-Funded Traineeship Programme

Responding to the concerns of new graduates facing job market challenges, the government will also roll out a traineeship programme. This will provide valuable training opportunities for participants from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnics, and universities.

  • Building on the successful SGUnited Traineeships Programme from 2020.
  • Focus on real-world experience to enhance employability amid economic uncertainty.
  • Training will include a financial allowance for participants.

During his address, Mr Wong reassured graduates, stating, “Do not fear. You are not alone on this journey… we will walk with you—every step of the way.”

Both initiatives signal the government’s proactive approach to cater to the changes in Singapore’s demographic landscape, ensuring that both seniors and recent graduates receive necessary support as they navigate their respective challenges.
