PAP’s New Faces in Sengkang GRC Aim to Win Over Residents Ahead of General Election

As the General Election approaches, the People’s Action Party (PAP) is making a concerted effort to regain voter confidence in Sengkang GRC. Led by Dr Lam Pin Min and a fresh team, including Theodora Lai, Elmie Nekmat, and Bernadette Giam, the PAP is looking to reconnect with the constituency after their defeat to the Workers’ Party (WP) in 2020.

New Energy and Commitment

During a recent walkabout at Sengkang Grand Mall and nearby hawker centres, Dr Lam highlighted the team’s youthful energy and commitment. With an average age of 44, the PAP’s new candidates present a contrast to the previous all-male slate. This time, they’ve included two women, aiming to enhance gender representation within their ranks.

Connecting with Residents

  • Community Engagement: The team engaged residents by distributing teddy bears to young families, symbolising comfort and care.
  • Listen and Learn: Giam expressed the importance of understanding residents’ needs to tailor future programmes.
  • Addressing Concerns: Nekmat raised issues regarding digital safety for families, showcasing their commitment to represent all generations.

Dr Lam, the last remaining member from the 2020 slate, acknowledged the challenge of winning back the constituency, stating, “It’s always a challenge to win back a constituency, especially a GRC from the opposition.”

Mixed Reactions from Residents

Local sentiments are varied. Some residents appreciate the return of PAP representatives, noting improvements in Sengkang, while others remain cautious, seeking more from the new candidates before solidifying their support. For instance, resident Tan, who previously voted for PAP, acknowledged the current opposition’s effectiveness but still hopes for strong candidates in the upcoming election.

Ultimately, as voters prepare for the upcoming election, the new PAP team is banking on their sincerity, passion, and understanding of community needs to win back support in Sengkang.
