Ordering from economy rice stalls just got a whole lot simpler! Starting from 24 March 2024, Koufu food courts and coffee shops will implement a brand-new system of colour-coded price labels to help customers make informed choices about their meals.
New Pricing Initiative
This initiative, launched in partnership with the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), aims to enhance transparency in pricing at economy rice stalls. The first installation of the labels took place at the Hong Le Mixed Veg Rice stall in Plantation Plaza’s Koufu food court, with dignitaries like CASE president Melvin Yong and Koufu’s chief financial officer Chua Sher Lin present.
Understanding the Labels
- Seafood dishes: Blue labels – priced at $2.50
- Meat dishes: Red labels – priced at $1.50
- Vegetable dishes: Green labels – priced at $1.00
- Premium items: White labels – with handwritten prices
The initiative is set to roll out across all 77 Koufu food courts and coffee shops by the end of 2025, promoting clarity and preventing disputes over prices.
Consumer Feedback
Yong noted that many consumers often faced confusion regarding the actual prices of the dishes after selecting them. He expressed hope that this initiative will pave the way for uniform pricing practices across all economy rice stalls in Singapore, saying, “It’s crucial we know clearly the price of what we are buying.”
A Win-Win for Customers and Stall Operators
Chua echoed this sentiment, stating that the new labelling will not only uplift customer experience by clarifying pricing choices but also benefit stall operators by ensuring fair and transparent pricing.
As Singaporeans, we all know the struggle of choosing from a sea of delicious options at the hawker centre. This new initiative is sure to make meal times a bit more straightforward—and let’s face it, who doesn’t need a little less stress when deciding between chicken or fried tofu?
