Police Warn of Johor-Singapore Housing Subsidy Scam

The Singapore Police Force has alerted the public about a fraudulent scheme involving a supposed “Johor-Singapore housing subsidy” making rounds on social media. The scam touts a non-existent collaboration between the Singapore and Johor governments to provide subsidised housing, enticing victims with ads claiming free homes across the Causeway.

What the Scam Entails

Victims may encounter advertisements labelled as the “JBSG Housing Subsidy Program” or similar phrases on platforms like Facebook. These ads often contain links directing users to apply for the alleged scheme, which is entirely fabricated.

Deceptive Documents

  • Scammers have even forged documents carrying the purported signatures of the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia.
  • These documents claim to enhance economic integration and raise living standards.

Once individuals click on the links, they are rerouted to WhatsApp, where they are asked to provide personal details such as their Singapore ID, residential address, and email.

Financial Risks

In several instances, victims have been instructed to transfer money online for legal and stamp duties or hand over cash to unknown individuals. This practice raises significant concerns about identity theft and financial loss.

How to Protect Yourself

The police have advised everyone to be vigilant and cautious:

  • Do not provide personal information to unverified sources.
  • Avoid transferring money or valuables to individuals whose identity cannot be confirmed.
