SINGAPORE: A power outage struck parts of Hougang on Monday morning, 2 June 2024, leaving residents and businesses without electricity for about 14 minutes. According to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), the disruption occurred at approximately 11:14 am, with full power restoration completed by 11:28 am.
SP Group, the national grid operator, confirmed the outage via a Facebook post, stating that their officers were swiftly deployed to address the situation. “Our priority is to restore supply safely and as quickly as possible,” they added.

Holdups were felt particularly at food and beverage stalls within the Hougang RiverCourt mall. Staff from Wok Delight mentioned that they had to refund customers after the outage interrupted food preparations. “We couldn’t cook anything, so we had to refund customers that just ordered their food,” a staff member said.

User Reactions
Social media users expressed their frustrations over the outage. One Facebook user, August Gan, hilariously noted the irony while dining at Hougang Rivercourt. “Come here to eat for the aircon but blackout… so hot now,” she wrote.
On Reddit, another user observed: “Anyone outside of Hougang and Sengkang seeing power failures? Even the traffic lights are dead.” It seemed that the outage not only caused discomfort but also disrupted daily activities in these areas.
Investigation Underway
The EMA is taking the situation seriously, stating they will investigate the cause of the outage. In the meantime, concerned residents and business owners are advised to check their electrical systems, especially in commercial or industrial buildings, as a reset may be necessary post-outage.
The affected areas were gradually restored, and officials have thanked the public for their patience during this inconvenience.
