Singapore is set to strengthen its ties with Africa by establishing a new embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on 24 November 2024. This marks Singapore’s first diplomatic mission in East Africa and the third on the continent, following those in South Africa and Egypt.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
During a joint press conference with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, PM Wong highlighted the “clear potential” for collaboration between Singapore and Ethiopia. He described the embassy as a “tangible demonstration” of Singapore’s commitment to its partnership with the East African nation and acknowledged Ethiopia’s strategic importance in regional affairs.
Engagement with the African Union
The new embassy will facilitate closer engagement with the African Union, whose headquarters is situated in Addis Ababa. According to PM Wong, this presence will allow Singapore to deepen its understanding of Africa and explore new avenues for cooperation.
Collaborative Efforts on Sustainability
- Signing of memoranda of understanding on skills development and carbon credits.
- Joint initiatives aimed at improving carbon markets.
- Shared commitment to climate action amidst Ethiopia’s upcoming hosting of COP32 in 2027.
Through these agreements, both countries aim to develop high-integrity carbon markets and engage in mutually beneficial collaborations focused on sustainability. Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Foreign Affairs Gan Siow Huang expressed that climate action is most effective when nations support each other.
Looking Ahead
PM Wong’s visit to Ethiopia is not only about diplomacy but also about learning and sharing insights into the respective development journeys. The new embassy is expected to open doors to further opportunities, enhancing Singapore’s relations across Africa.
