Singaporeans Stranded Abroad Amid Escalating Middle Eastern Tensions

As tensions rise in the Middle East, several Singaporeans find themselves in precarious situations, both stranded and in need of evacuation. With airspace closures and ongoing conflicts, the Singaporean government is stepping up its support for those affected.

Stranded at Doha Airport

Singapore-bound passengers were left stranded at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, following the sudden closure of airspace by several Middle Eastern nations. This decision was made after Iran’s military strike on a US military base, resulting in a chaotic scene at the airport.

  • More than 25,000 passengers reported being stuck at Doha airport.
  • Over 250 flights were cancelled, with an additional 238 delayed.
  • Passengers have expressed frustration and anxiety as they faced long queues and uncertain flight statuses.

Ms Melodie Yip, who was in transit, recounted her experience trying to rebook her Qatar Airways flight, stating she spent around eight hours in line only to face further cancellations. She, along with other stranded Singaporeans, have been hoping for accommodations or timely updates from the airline.

Evacuations from Iran

On a different front, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore confirmed successful evacuations of several citizens from Iran amidst the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. As of 23 June 2024, four Singaporeans have been safely evacuated, while seven others received assistance in leaving the country.

  • A family of three was evacuated to Muscat, Oman.
  • Another Singaporean left Iran with a group of Malaysians to Turkmenistan.

The Ministry expressed gratitude for the collaboration with governments of Oman and Malaysia, as Singapore lacks a diplomatic mission in Iran, making consular support challenging. They have urged citizens to defer all non-essential travel to the region.

Qatar Airways Cancels More Flights

The airline chaos continues as Singapore’s budget carrier Scoot has also cancelled flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, amid the turmoil affecting travel in the Middle East. With the ongoing conflict, air routes are being rerouted, further complicating travel plans.

Singaporeans currently stranded are encouraged to stay alert and monitor official advisories as the situation develops.
